Texans wide receiver John Metchie’s wait to play in his first NFL regular-season game could come to an end this week.
Metchie missed his rookie season after being diagnosed with leukemia, but was cleared to return this year. Metchie played in the preseason before suffering a hamstring injury that prevented him from practicing or playing in last week’s loss to the Ravens.
Metchie returned to the practice field on Wednesday, however, and the Texans placed Noah Brown on injured reserve this week, so it appears there’s a clear path for Metchie to get the call against the Colts this weekend. Metchie said Wednesday that he will continue to be patient until it is finally time for him to take the field.
“I’m very excited, but I can’t get too far ahead of me”Metchie said, via KPRC’s Aaron Wilson. “I just, like I said, have to be patient. That is the most important. Although I am very excited, I have to be patient and be ready every time my number is called.”
The beginning of Metchie’s professional career has faced more obstacles than imagined and that will make it even sweeter for him to take the field this weekend.
