Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson had a rough Monday. He could have a rough Tuesday, too.

Watson committed not one, but two egregious mask fouls in Pittsburgh, grabbing a defender by the cage and throwing him to the ground. As Chris Simms and I discussed on Tuesday Live PFTWatson appeared to be frustrated, either by the fact that he can no longer run away from pursuing defenders or by what opposing players are telling him up close about his off-field problems, or both.

When has a player committed two flagrant fouls while wearing a mask in a game? When has a quarterback had one? It’s one of the original safety rules, dating back long before the years when the NFL downplayed and denied the risks of concussions.

Even a minor grab and tug on a mask is penalized and fined. Watson took it to the next level, twice, throwing players to the grass.

Then there was Watson’s shove at a referee during the scrum that broke out after his first mask penalty. (And yes, it was a push). Contact with an official always requires expulsion. Added to everything else, it could result in a suspension, in theory.

Would the NFL suspend a franchise quarterback (or at least a quarterback who is paid as such)? Officials could have turned a blind eye when they should have expelled him. Will the powers that be be influenced by your status and importance to your team and the game when designing a penalty?

Whatever happens, someone needs to calm him down. Last night something got under her skin and she stayed there. Future opponents will surely try to replicate that, each and every week, until he proves it doesn’t frustrate him.
