Notas de mi cuaderno

Congratulations to you League of Mexican American Women (Liga de Mujeres Mexicano-estadounidenses del Condado de Fresno through the Gala Golden Jubilee in The Grand 1401 on Saturday 9 septiembre.

The group was founded by Betty Rodríguez, Merce Bencomo, Dolly Arredondo and Rose Nájera in response to having been relegated to the work of secretaries and Latin organizations, such as the Mexican American Political Association, founded and Fresno in 1960.

The league is funded to “promover el avance de las Latinas, in través de logros educativos, desarrollo de leadership, cultural enriquecimiento y servicios de voluntariado”.

“Nuestra comunidad sugue necessitando nuestra dedicado atención”, said the president of the league, Martha Espinoza.

Women from Visalia, Madera, Modesto, Bakersfield and Sacramento asked for help to organize their own groups. In 1979, the league joined the Mexican National Women’s Commission, but abandoned it at the end of four years to better focus on local problems.

Una primicia para el restaurante mexicano Javier’s

Since its foundation almost 50 years ago, the Mexican restaurant Javier’s has served una comida en domingo. Louie Durán, who passed away last year, founded the restaurant in 1974 and thought that the Sabbath was the time for the families to go to the church.

Todo cambió el primer domingo de septiembre, cuando el restaurante, situado en 5680 E. Kings Canyon Road, abrio para ofrecer un brunch from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The establishment remains closed on Mondays.

A year later, the organization sin ánimo de lucre was recognized by the State.

MAGA has expanded into San Diego, San José, Bakersfield, Madera, Delano and many other cities. It is the major organization Latina de golf. Arizona and Texas have the titles. The 2023 state tournament was held in Nevada.

In fact, Louie Durán (mentioned previously) used to own the Fresno West Golf Course and organized MAGA tournaments. Durán sold the golf course that he renamed as Javier’s Fresno West, and the terrain is now covered with pistachios.

Una not final

Enhorabuena a la reportera de Vida en el Valle María G. Ortiz-Briones by winning the Ethnic Media Services award al more artículo de última hora. She reported last November about the historic victory of Eddie Valero, who became the first Latino and won re-election to the Board of Supervisors of Tulare County.

This history includes Emmanuel Soto, que se convertía en el segundo latino en conseguir un puesto in la Junta Escolar de Visalia. The population is 67% of Latina and 53%.
