In normal life, it’s a little insulting for someone to tell another person, “Calm down.” In football, it’s something players sometimes need to hear.
Bills quarterback Josh Allen needed to hear it Monday night. He was trying too hard to lead the Bills to victory. He seemed frustrated that the Bills didn’t beat the Jets after they lost quarterback Aaron Rodgers. At times, Allen seemed to think that with one great shot the Bills would score 17 points.
After the game, Allen admitted it was “the same shit.” That forced too many pitches. That he did too many of the things he had done last year, when expectations of a Super Bowl victory and an MVP trophy turned into a season with too many struggles and a 27-10 divisional round loss in home against the Bengals.
The solution is simple. It’s obvious. Allen needs someone who can look him in the eye and tell him to calm down. But there are two problems with that.
First, offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey doesn’t seem like the reassuring type, especially in light of the how he reacted to last year’s loss to the Dolphins. Second, head coach Sean McDermott has little to no chance to talk to Allen when the offense is on the bench, because McDermott is now the defensive play-caller.
It’s something the Bills need to figure out quickly. There will be other moments like Monday night throughout the season. Allen will be frustrated, irritated and bewildered. Someone has to get him to calm down. To execute the offensive. Take the easy play instead of trying to do the impossible.
For his first interception on Monday night, Allen I could have run for a first try. Instead, he threw a deep ball that went wide and was easily intercepted.
Someone needs to aggressively train him to be less aggressive. Don’t treat every play like the last play of the Super Bowl. Trust the players around you to do the little things and trust that enough little things will add up to victory after victory after victory.
On Monday night, the Bills lost a game they should have won. Given their 2023 schedule, that can’t happen many times. If so, they won’t have to worry about losing at home in the playoffs this year, because they won’t make the postseason.
